Original green gilt cloth, upper edge gilt otherwise uncut. Very slightly shaken. Some offsetting to endpapers. First edition of a fundamental work on the Easter Island including information of its cultural and ethnographical problems. Mrs. Routledge and her husband undertook several anthropological expeditions to the island which they financed themselves. Contains many photographs of the island's statues, probably the earliest photograhic survey undertaken. Additionally it contains a lot of information about the places encountered along the route: the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, Tahiti, Hawaiian Islands, The Panama, Jamaica, the Bahamas, Bermuda, etc. Robinson p. 148.
