The History of England from the First Invasion by the Romans to the Accession of King George the Fifth. In Eleven Volumes New York, The Catholic Publication Society of America. 1912, First Edition. Cloth, 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Book, 11 volumes: xlvi, 549pp. (1912); xi, 628pp. (1912); xi, 543pp. (1912); xi, 596pp. (1912); xi, 546pp. (1912); xii, 719pp. (1912); xi, 560pp. (1912); xii, 650pp. (1912); xi, 514pp. (1912); xi, 552p. (1912); xxvii, 729pp. (1915). Bound in original burgundy cloth, with black labels to spines and top-edges of pages gilt. Frontispiece (portrait) to each volume. With an Introduction by His Eminence James Cardinal Gibbons. Volumes admit to varying degrees of wear. Minor bumps to extremities of boards, here and there, with tiny cuts to cloth in a very few places. Edges of pages also admit to bumps, here and there, with entire upper corner of text of volume 4 admitting to a bump. Bindings are a little tender, as is common for this set. Approximately 6 hinges cracked, though leaves remain in place and all text blocks square. Back hinge of volume two more severely cracked, though all leaves remain firmly in place. Cloth admits to a few minor scuff marks, light soiling, and mild discoloration to a few places. Sadly, the last approximately 15 pages of volume eleven at one point came into contact with some moisture, as did the back board of same. However, this damage is not terribly offensive. Some tanning to paper, throughout. Aesthetically, this remains an attractive set. Will require a little care in handling to maintain the integrity of the bindings, though one will not have to treat the book like a dried flower that has been pressed in a book for 50 years. SCARCE.
