Aber wirklich gute Bestimmungsbücher, die ausserdem noch die Ökologie und Lebensweise der Arten beschreiben, sind sehr selten. Bücher, die auf Zeichnungen und nicht auf Fotos setzen, sind noch seltener. Umso schöner, dass Bücher wie dieser Pareys Reptilien- und Amphibienführer Europas wenigstens noch antiquarisch zu bekommen sind. Leider oftmals recht teuer. Aufbau und Gliederung des Buches sind "klassisch". Zunächst erhält der Leser eine Einführung in die Biologie und Ökologie der Amphibien und Reptilien. In der deutschen Übersetzung wird übrigens nur von Lurchen und Kriechtieren gesprochen. Dann folgen die Artbeschreibungen. Sie enthalten relativ umfangreiche Angaben zur Bestimmung, zu den äusseren Merkmalen und Kennzeichen und zur Grösse. Des Weiteren enthalten die Beschreibungen Angaben zu Lebensräumen, Lebensweisen, zur Fortpflanzung, zu regionalen Varianten, Ähnlichkeiten und Verwechslungsmöglichkeiten mit anderen Arten, zur Verbreitung, usw. Ziemlich ausführlich, wobei der Schwerpunkt eindeutig auf den Bestimmungsmerkmalen liegt. Die Ausführungen sind durch eine Vielzahl von s/w-Zeichnungen illustriert, in denen viele Details hervorgehoben und verglichen werden. Farbzeichnungen der Tiere sind auf 2-seitigen Tafeln immer mal wieder in die Textkapitel eingestreut. Das ist nicht ganz optimal, denn die Zeichnungen stehen nicht bei der beschriebenen Art, und auch nicht als kompletter Tafelteil zusammen. So ist immer ein bisschen Blättern erforderlich. Die Farbzeichnungen - insgesamt 260 - sind dafür ausgezeichnet! Sie sind sehr detailliert und zeigen geschlechtsspezifische Unterschiede wie auch regionale Variabilitäten. Das Buch enthält mehrere Bestimmungsschlüssel. Zum Einen für die adulten Tiere, jeweils einführend zu Beginn der Kapitel über die Familien, zum anderen auch für Larven und für Laich. Das Buch ist somit rappelvoll mit Informationen, insbesondere zur Bestimmung der Tiere. Die 121 Verbreitungskarten der Arten stehen am Schluss des Buches in einer eigenen Abteilung. Die jeweils in s/w gehaltene Karte Europas zeigt nur die Küstenlinien, und in schwarzer Färbung das jeweilige Verbreitungsgebiet. Nicht sonderlich genau, aber zur Orientierung ausreichend. Insgesamt ein tolles Buch, etwas nostalgisch anmutend und nicht mehr ganz auf dem aktuellen Stand der Forschung, aber inhaltlich wirklich gut und deutlich besser als so vieles, was heute auf den Markt gebracht wird. ¶ First edition. Republished in 1844, and recently in 1998. Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832), English social philosopher whose influence on the development of economic thought and theory was very great. Burton was an Edinburgh lawyer and a professional writer for literary journals. He established his name as an author with the 'Life and Correspondence of David Hume' (1846), in which he threw light for the first time on Hume as an economist. Before editing 'Benthamiana' he played an important role in assisting Sir John Bowring in editing the works of Bentham. 'The more the matter is investigated the clearer it becomes that Burton, not Bowring, was the effectively responsible editor.' -- J. H. Burns, Emeritus Professor of History, University College London, in 'Bentham and the Scots' (The Bentham Project, 2004). This edition remains much sought after. While OCLC 1866322 locates 50 copies worldwide, it lists (OCLC 9868685) over 60 others in microform only.
