Kirchengeschichte des Neuen Testaments. Vols. 3 and 4 Leipzig, Weygandischen Buchhandlung. 1771. Hard Cover. [xiv], 608, 96, [16]; and [viii], 714, 56, [12] pages. These are the last two volumes of a four-volume set. It is the German translation of the English translation (edited by Maclaine) or the Latin original. Is that clear? The condition of the contents of both volumes is very good with just some aging of the paper; however, the covers are in poor condition (especially of volume 3) but still intact. Fair/No Jacket. Anderweitiger Versuch Einer Vollstandigen Und Unparthevischen Ketzergechichte. [Together with]: Versuch Einer Unpartheyischen Und Grundlichen Ketzergeschichte. Zwote [Sic] Auflage. [and with]: Neue Nachrichten Von Dem Beruhmten Spanischen Arzte Michael Serveto, Der Zu Geneve Ist Verbrannt Worden. (3 Books in 1 Volume). Helmstaedt: bey Christian Friederich Weygand, 1748 through 1750. [1748]. - Quarto, 9-3/4 inches high by 8-1/4 inches wide. Hardcover bound in early natural cream vellum. The corners of the covers are slightly worn with a couple of very minor chips to the head of the spine. The vellum covers are slightly soiled. The books within this volume are respectively paginated as follows: pages 28 & [1]-500 [i.e. 530], with pages 233-262 being repeated in the numbering; pages 12, [3]-56 & [i]-400; and 108 pages. The work is illustrated with a full-page frontispiece portrait of Michael Servetus in flames within a burning frame at the bottom of which wood is piled. The portrait, dated 1748 in Leipzig, is by Johann Martin Bernigeroth (1713-1767). Each of the three books is illustrated with a pictorial printer's device, as well as numerous ornamented initials & head- and tail-pieces. The volume is further illustrated with 3 fine half-page copperplate engravings contained within the second book. The first, engraved by Georg Daniel Heumann (1691-1759), depicts angels, satyrs, and cherubs in the foreground, on either side of a statue of a bust on a pedestal with a physician's serpent staff resting on a bible on top of an ax sculpted upon the base and globes on either side. The University of Gottingen is in the background. The second and third engravings are by Johan Martin Bernigeroth (1713-1767). The second illustrates the snake ritual of the Ophites. The scene is reminescent of the last supper, with 13 figures seated at a large oval table, with a chandelier above and oppulent curtains in the background. Bread rolls and wine are served in large platters on the table. But here, a snake is wrapped around one platter as another slithers in at left. The Panarion of Epiphanius of Samalis speaks of the ritual thus: "They have a snake, which they keep in a certain chest -- the cista mystica -- and which at the hour of their mysteries they bring forth from its cave. They heap loaves upon the table and summon the serpent. Since the cave is open it comes out. It is a cunning beast and, knowing their foolish ways, it crawls up on the table and rolls in the loaves; this they say is the perfect sacrifice....They break the bread in which the snake has rolled and administer it to those present, but each one kisses the snake on the mouth, for the snake has been tamed by a spell...." The third engraving is a finely drawn battle scene in which an army attired in armor bearing spears, are gathered on the top of a cliff above a ravine in the company of their caped mounted leader. Another similarly clad army stands behind a stone wall atop the cliff on the other side of the ravine. The gathered forces in the foreground appear to be drawing back slightly. What appears to be a wounded man reclines near a tree at left as others are pulling injured comrades up the ledge. Ex-library, de-acquisitioned by the Andover-Harvard Theological library with their Rare Book Room's pictorial bookplate on the front pastedown. There are cracks along the paper of the pastedowns, a tiny tear to the bottom edge of the frontispiece, and some very minor occasional foxing throughout. Very good. The first editions of the first and third books and the second edition of the second book. The contents of the first volume include: "Geschichte des beruhmten Spanischen Arztes Michaels Serveto"; "Anmerkungen zu dem ersten Buche der Geschichte des Michael Serveto"; "Das andere Buch der Geschichte des Michaels Serveto"; "Anmerkungen su dem zwenten Buche der Geschichte des Michael Serveto"; "Geschichte des beruhmten Spanischen arztes Michael Serveto: Das dritte Buch"; and "Beylagen und Urkunden zu der Geschichte des Spanishchen Arztes Michael Serveto."The second volume includes: "A new introduction by von Mosheim", (dated 1748); "Geschichte der Schlangenbruder der ersten Kirche ober der so genannten Ophiten"; "Anmerkungen zur Erlauterung und Bestatigung der Geschichte der Ophiten oder Schlangenbruder"; "Geschichte des Apostel-Ordens in dreien Buchern"; "Anmerkungen die zu der Aufklarung und Bestatigung der Geschichte des Apostelordens dienen".This substantial work on Christian heresies, particularly the Ophites, who were a Christian Gnostic sect, and the Apostolic Brethren founded by Gerard Segarelli, was first published in 1746 and served as a foundation for von Mosheim's two important works on Michael Servetus which were published in 1748 and 1750. This second edition includes a new preface by the author. Although this book collates complete with other copies we have located, there is no leaf "a1". The text is complete and "a1" may have been a half-title or something deliberately not published in this edition.Johann Lorenz von Mosheim [1693-1755] was an important Lutheran church historian.Michael Servetus [c. 1511-1553] was a physician who made an important contribution to medicine. He stated that the heart pumps blood to the lungs where it is oxygenated. Prior to his description, it was believed, as suggested by Galen, that blood was oxygenated in the heart. The great passion of Servetus, however, was theology. He published an attack on the idea of the Trinity ["De trinitatis erroribus"], which was condemned by Protestants and Catholics and was banned in Strasbourg. In 1553 he published "Christianismi restitutio", another controversial work. He was arrested, convicted of heresy and condemned to death. He was burned at the stake in Champel, Switzerland on October 27, 1553.von Mosheim's books, which are based in part on the records of the Vienne examination, are a somewhat sympathetic review of Servetus' life and writings and constitute some of the most important scholarship on their subject. Roland H. Bainton, in his article "The Present State of Servetus Studies" [The Journal of Modern History, Vol. 4, No. 1. March 1932] wrote: "Of the works prior to Vander Linde, the first of any moment, and one still worth reading, is that of Mosheim, not only for the balance of judgement, but for the evidence which later accounts give in abbreviated form on his authority. Take, for example, the proof offered in the Neue Nach. [p. 32] that Servetus in 1534 was in Orleans. Some of the documents published by Mosheim are still not readily accessible elsewhere." Oktober 1693 in Lübeck; † 9.
