Black Mountain Review - Vol. 1, Nos. 1, 2, 3 & 4, Vol. 2 Nos. 5, 6, & 7 (Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter 1954, Spring 1956, Autumn 1957) [Complete Set] Black Mountain, N.C. Black Mountain College, 1954-57. First edition. 8vos. Original printed wraps. Generally very good to near fine. Mild rubbing, toning to all issues. A few small corner bumps. Issue Three (Fall '54) has some smudging and a few spots of soil, as well as heavier toning and small tear to spine. Mild creasing to spines of #s 6 and 7. Else a remarkably well-preserved group; all seven volumes in original wraps. Very Good +/Wraps, A complete run of this landmark journal. One of the most important small magazines of the 20th century. Creeley's Black Mountain Review served as a bridge between the various avant-guard poetries of the 1950's: from the Beats to the San Francisco Renaissance. Print runs for the BMR were typically small: 500 to 750, with many now in institutions and many others not surviving (indeed, Robert Creeley has written that only "about 200 of which ever got distributed"). Includes the final issue, arguably the strongest Creeley and company produced, noted for the first appearance of William S. Burroughs' Naked Lunch (writing as 'William Lee') [Maynard and Miles C2]; marks Burroughs' third appearance in print overall. Also includes Ginsberg's "America" [Morgan C53], Kerouac's "From October in the Railroad Earth," an early and important review of Ginsberg's "Howl," as well as William Carlos Williams on Ginsberg. Also includes first appearance of Kerouac's much-reprinted Beat manifesto "Essentials of Spontaneous Prose" [Charters C18]. [Clay & Phillips 106-109]. [Anderson & Kinzie 248]. Individual issues are increasingly scarce, runs rare. Book number: 11610 USD 5000.00 [Appr.: EURO 3791.25 | £UK 3170.5 | JP¥ 388316]
