PAXMAN, JEREMY; HARRIS, ROBERT
A Higher Form of Killing : The Secret Story of Gas and Germ Warfare
New York, New York, U.S.A. Hill and Wang. 1982, First Edition. (ISBN: 080905471x). Hardcover. Ill.: Photographs. Book, This book begins with the First World War, when poison gas killed or maimed one and a half million men in the mud of Flanders. It tells of the Japanese use of mustard gas and biological weapons in the 1930s, the Nazis' discovery of nerve gas in 1937, and the huge arsenal of chemical weapons which Hitler, who used gas to kill millions in concentration camps, several times came close to using in battle. It tells of horrifying secret experiments with anthrax in the 1940s, the development of the plague bacillus, and futuristic attempts to tinker with the genetic code. The horrors of biological bombs, anti-crop agents used in German and Japan, causing widespread starvation, and tons of chemical defoliants in Vietnam are covered. The Russians also may have used chemical warfare in Laos, Afghanistan, and Eritrea. A fascinating and frightening story, since these agents have been used in recent times and may continue to be used. 274 pages, including notes and an index. The binding is cloth, and is slightly turned over at the spine end. The jacket has light chipping at both spine ends. There are a few light spots on the vertical edge of the paper. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Near Fine/Very Good.
