Maanden woonde zij bij een lokale familie, hetgeen onder ander resulteerde in een unieke en onthullende kijk op het zich achter muren en sluiers afspelende leven van vrouwen. Mooie, scherpzinnige en gevoelige beschrijvingen van land, volk en gewoonten, van de overweldigende natuur en de jegens vreemdelingen in haar gastvrijheid verenigde bevolking. Tien jaar later bezocht de schrijfster dezelfde gebieden en mensen nogmaals. Dit laatste bezoek levert een mooie vergelijking op, waarbij opvalt dat een deel van het heilige vuur na een decennium ietwat gedoofd lijkt.
