Guests Never Leave Hungry: The Autobiography of James Sewid, a Kwakiutl Indian Kingston and Montreal, McGill Queen's University Press. 1972, Reprint, 1983. (ISBN: 0773501347) Trade Paperback , 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 310 pp. illus. biblio. index; 22 cm. First published, 1969. Tight, clean copy. Browning. Another copy available. "The story of James Sewid, a twentieth-century Kwakiutl Indian Chieftain, brings to life the experience of one man caught in conflict as the traditional Kwakiutl culture gave way to the demands of an expanding Western society in British Columbia. Born in 1910 into a rapidly disintegrating Indian culture, Sewid as a young child received unusually intensive training and special treatment from his elders because he was their heir to many 'names,' which he early learned carried great responsibility with them. In spite of poverty, illiteracy, family breakdown, and social conflict, he emerged as a leader of the progressive Indians of the Kwakiutl Reserve in Alert Bay, becoming their first elected chief when the traditional system of hereditary chiefs was replaced. / The late James P. Spradley was a member of the Department of Anthropology at Macalester College, Saint Paul, Minnesota." - Publisher. Very Good. Book number: 038223 USD 5.00 [Appr.: EURO 4 | £UK 3.25 | JP¥ 397]

Cocktail Waitress: Woman's Work in a Man's World McGraw-Hill College. 1975, First Edition. (ISBN: 0075547643) Trade Paperback. Size: 6" x 9". EAN: 9780075547648. 154 pp. This book had been stored improperly and has developed an interesting bow. It is not bad. Outside of that, it would be flawless. Pages are clean & bright, with no marking, browning or creasing. "I first read this book about 20 years ago, towards the tail end of my 25 years in the Bar/Restaurant business, and it is far and away, the best book to understand the bar culture, America and human behavior when attempting to enjoy themselves. You will go inside and learn about division of labor in a bar and the sexism inherent. The importance of territory. How 'regulars' differ from 'real-regulars' and the rights and priveleges accorded both. The intrinsic differences between male and female group behavior. Brenda Mann worked her way through college as a coctail waitress and used the experience for her thesis, which became this book. A fascinating sociological look at tribal cultural mores in this particular setting. One of the most fascinating references in the book is how, with casual joking, almost gibberish-like, exact communication occurs without ever even mentioning the matter being discussed. I highly recommend this book for anyone who really wants to know the scene from the inside, carefully delineated. This should be must reading for anyone in the bar business. '--Dennis Mulcahy.
