A confirmed somaticist who believed that isanity was entirely due to organic brain disease, Jacobi was the first German physician to achieve complete control of an asylum, at Siegburg (near Bonn) in 1825. Most remembered for his book On the Construction and Management of Hospitals for the Insane [1834, 1st English translation issued in 1841], the principal German treatise on asylum construction and management, was considerably influenced by Samuel Tuke's meliorist ideas -- Jacobi translated Tuke's Description of the Retreat into German and issued it along with his own treatise.
