The first work is a rare collection of letters from the first five Superior Generals of the Society of Jesus to their subordinates, ranging from the years 1547-1613. 24 letters in all including 4 on the missions and 2 by St. Ignatius. These are followed by a separately paginated, printed letter by Mutius Vitellescus [Mutio Vitelleschi] (1563-1645), the sixth superior general of the order, dated 1617. 8vo (17 x 12cm), viii + 396pp + 31pp. Bound in worn contemporary limp vellum, with thorough chipping at fore-edge. Library markings on title-page and spine. Internally good condition.

Report of the Pine Land Investigating Committee to the Governor of Minnesota…five thousand copies ordered printed for the use of the legislature.

St. Paul, Pioneer Press Co., 1895. First and only printing, 8vo, 87pp., original blue printed wrappers, a few small chips in the spine and mild dampstain entering from top margin, else a fine copy. See BAL, p. 478 who had not seen a copy. Donnelley left the Republican Party after having served for three terms as Minnesota's Representative in Washington, because he saw that the Republicans were "eternally wedded to the interests of the few." In turn he became a Liberal Republican, Granger, and finally a Greenback-Democrat. As a leader of the Farmers' Alliance in the state legislature, he led it "almost to a man" into the Populist party, "in the formation of which he had an active part." The Pine Land Investigating Committee was empowered by the state legislature in 1893 to investigate the thievery of timber "stumpage" from timberland in Minnesota. Donnelley was the chairman of the seven-man committee, and the report, which blew the whistle on the stumpage thieves, was written almost entirely by him.

¶ This Gretser's important Apologia on Life of Ignatius Loyola, one of the most fascinating hagiographies ever written on the Jesuit order founder, describing how he [Loyola] would drive away Satan, who appeared in "a shining and glistening form" with his staff, like a "troublesome cur." It also describes Loyola's great humility, living amongst the poor. Gretser's Apologia is a massive defence of the great saint, filled with reference to other great saints, including early Orthodox fathers such as Gregory of Nazianzenus, Latin fathers like St. Augustine and Jerome, as well as English Catholic martyrs killed during Henry VIII's Reformation. Gretser himself, then as now, was/is regarded as one of the most prominent Jesuit theologians. "He was recognized as one of the best controversialists of his time, and was highly esteemed by Pope Clement VIII, Emperor Ferdinand II, and Maximilian I of Bavaria. Some of the greatest of his age, such as Cardinal Bellarmine and Marcus Welser, corresponded with him and consulted him in their difficulties." [Wiki]. A somewhat uncommon Jesuit work, with ABPC showing no copies having come to auction these last 30+ years.
