Howard Irving Chapelle (1901–1975) was an American naval architect, and curator of maritime history at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D. C.. In addition, he authored many books and articles books on maritime history and marine architecture. From 1919, Chapelle worked as a marine apprentice and designer for a number of shipbuilders. After 1936, he went into business for himself, and later served as head of the New England section of the Historic American Merchant Marine Survey, a New Deal project designed to research American naval history and staffed by unemployed marine architects. During World War II, Chapelle served in the United States Army Transportation Corps ship and boatbuilding program. In 1950, he ventured to England where he researched colonial ship design on a Guggenheim fellowship. Chapelle was a small-boat enthusiast and sailor. He felt that inexpensive yachts based on traditional workboats were the most practical way to go sailing and designed a number of small boats. This book, American Small Sailing Craft (1951) , is considered the classic among small-boat builders and historians. In it he documented many fast-vanishing working boats.. American Small Sailing Craft Their Design, Development, and Construction
NY: W. W. Norton, c. 1951. Hardcover. ISBN: 0393031438. Other than some very minor bumping to the top of the book and DJ's spine, the book and DJ are almost as new. ; 9-3/8" Tall, xviii + 363pp. Full blue cloth binding, bright gold spine lettering, bright gold small silhouette of a boat on front cover. BOATING. Although the copyright date is 1951, the DJ makes reference to Mr. Chapelle's death in 1975. "This book is first of all a collection of over 100 plans of small sailing craft used in coastwise trade and occupations during the days of sail. The boats described are within the limit of forty feet on deck, are inexpensive to build and maintain, and yet are highly practical sailing craft. Often these craft represent handsome and efficient designs. They appeal to the modern small-boat enthusiast who wishes to build an inexpensive sailboat, and the plans are usually sufficient for building by the backyard boatbuilder. A chapter on colonial small craft is of special importance in describing how these boats were rigged and what their models were like...And for the historically minded reader this is an important contribution to our knowledge of sailing craft in America by the outstanding authority on the subject. " Index.. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket .
