Boek is in prima staat.

¶ Contents: The Gold Standard; Financial Mobilization; The Loss of Budgetary Control; Taxation; Domestic Borrowing; Foreign Borrowing. ["To Arms" is Hew Strachan's most complete and definitive study of the opening of the First World War. Now, key sections from this magisterial work are published as individual paperbacks, each complete in itself, and with a new introduction by the author. The First World War was costly in treasure as well as lives. Before its outbreak many commentators reckoned that the great powers could not afford to fight or that economic dislocation would bring war to a rapid close. They were wrong. Ways were found to fund the fighting that went beyond conventional devices like taxation or domestic borrowing. Britain managed to raise much of the money which it and its allies needed in the United States, so implicating America in the war long before its formal entry in April 1917. This is the first full history of how the war was financed. It resulted in hyper-inflation in the 1920s and, in due course, in New York's displacement of London as the world's money market. Its effects are still with us today" - Publisher's description]

The First World War
Viking, 2003. First Thus. Hard Cover. Good/Very Good. First thus. Bright copy. Remainder mark on bottom edge. 2003 Hard Cover. One of the leading historians of WWI offers this superior one-volume version of his massive projected three-volume work, the first volume of which, To Arms, clocked in at 1250-plus pages last year. Strachan strenuously avoids the traditional focus on the Western Front (and the British) and the conventional assumptions of generals' stupidity and soldiers' valor. The war as he sees it was a race among generals on all sides to create new weapons and tactics faster than their opponents, a race that the Triple Entente won. It was also a race among soldiers to fight with these new weapons and tactics instead of raw courage and numbers wherever possible. Yet Russia and the Dual Monarchy of the Austro-Hungarian Empire were totally unfit for a large modern war (one reason the czar and his empire fell in 1917) and were a source of fatal weakness to Germany's alliance even before Italy changed sides. The political background (including the rising consciousness of colonial nationalities conscripted for the war), social consequences and diplomatic finagling all face an equal amount of revision, leaving the book organized more thematically than chronologically. Readers already familiar with the sequence of events in strict order will benefit most. But all readers will eventually be gripped, and even the most seasoned ones will praise the insights and the original choice of illustrations. This is likely to be the most indispensable one-volume work on the subject since John Keegan's First World War, and will draw serious readers to the larger work.

The First World War. A New Illustrated History
London England, Simon & Schuster, 2003. First Edition, Binding: Cloth, Fine/Near Fine. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall 0743239598 Hardback Hardback. First Edition. Price clipped to D/J. Buildinhg on his ongoing research for his mammoth three-volume history of the war, Hew Strachan now presents a stunning new account of the hostilities which offers many new interpretations of and insights into one of the defining events of the twentieth century. This one-volume history is not just riveting digest for the general reader of his other writing, it also provides the narrative structure and direction of the accompanying ten-part Channel 4 series. And, for the first time, it offers a truly global vision of a conflict which is often misconceived as a polonged skirmihs on the Western Front. Strachan argues convincingly that the war had become a 'world war' long before the involvement of the United States and the Russian Revolution of 1917. Far from being a 'European civil war', the conflivct involved the colonial terrirtores of European powers, and touched areas as far-flung as the Balkans, Africa and the Ottoman Empire. And it was the existence of these territories that helped explain why the war did not seem futile at the time: for Britain and France, it quickly became a struggle for the defence of liberalism. Accessible, compelling and utterly convincing, and featuring a wealth of photographs many of which have never previously been published, this is modern history writing at its finest. Illustrated. 350 pp.

Military lives
Oxford University Press, USA, 2003. Paperback. Pp: 384. The twentieth century saw two major world wars and many major and minor conflicts. Who made themselves known through their involvement in those wars and conflicts? Who do we remember? Who were the heroes of the army, navy, and airforce? Who should have been the heroes? What makes someone dedicate their life to the defence of a nation, whether it be on land, at sea, or in the air? What part did these people play in shaping the path of modern British military history? Britain as a nation has always been very proud of its military capabilities and through that its military personnel. Presented here is a unique collection of around 100 mini-biographies, taken from the Dictionary of National Biography, of some of the people who made the defence of their country their life. Military historian Hew Strachan has not only chosen the 'lives' to go into this collection but has also written a detailed introduction to complement his selection, which in itself makes an interesting and insightful read. This anthology isn't designed to give a cohesive history of life in the British army, navy, and airforce over the past 100 years, but rather it hopes to provide interesting snapshots into the lives of a few of the individuals who have made their mark, somehow or other, in the military world. Entries include: W. S. Chalmers on David Beatty F. Maurice on Douglas Haig Denis Richards on Sir Arthur Travers Harris Ronald Lewin on Captain Sir Basil Henry Liddell Hart E. T. Williams on Field-Marshall Montgomery Peter Wykenham on Arthur Tedder Peter Wykenham on Hugh Trenchard . ISBN: 9780198605324. Cond./Kwaliteit: Goed.
