HERSEY, JOHN.
THE ALGIERS MOTEL INCIDENT.
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1968. dj Book club edition. A detailed study of one incident that occurred during the Detroit Riots of 1967: in response to a report of shots, the police rushed to the motel where they found 10 black men and 2 white women. When they left, 3 of the men were dead, and the others were severely beaten, but no guns had been found, and the police involved did not report the incident. Hersey goes beyond this incident to look at the assumptions that underlie law and order as it is applied in this country. Very good in very good dust jacket.

JOHN HERSEY
The Algiers Motel Incident
England, Penguin, 1971. Reprint, Binding: Softcover, Fair. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall 0140031758 Paperback Good reading copy. During the race riots in Detroit in the summer of 1967, three negroes were found dead in the annexe of the Algiers Motel. They had been shot at close quarters. It transpired that they, along with seven other negroes and two white girls, had been questioned within the hour by police in connection with reports of sniping. No official report was made. To get at the truth the author interviewed the relations of the dead men and every available witness, including officials of the federal and local police. This book is his report on a case in which subsequently three Detroit policemen were indicted. These books in fair condition are good reading copies. Some may have worn corners, book store stamped inside, small splits at edges, some creases, owners names, old prices and/or minor imperfections. But all are complete
