Paris, 1913. F First Edition. 2pp, 8vo, edged in black, in fine state. An important letter, in which Bergson to a forthcoming dinner at The Society for Psychical Research, referring to his pleasurable anticipation of meeting Arthur Balfour, and referring to his Presidential Address in 1894. Nature, 5 june 1913, reports: ". HENRI BERGSON delivered his inaugural address as president of the Society for Psychical Research on Wednesday, May 28, in the ^Eolian Hall, New Bond Street. At the close of the address, which was delivered in French, and held the close attention of the company for nearly an hour and a half, Mr. A. J. Balfour, a past-president of the society, rose to express the thanks of the hearers, and characterised the address as the most interesting and illuminating one that the society has ever received. ". Eleanor Mildred Sidgwick, née Balfour (1845-1936) was an activist for the higher education of women, Principal of Newnham College and a leading figure in the Society for Psychical Research. Sister to Arthur J Balfour, As a young woman, Eleanor had helped Rayleigh improve the accuracy of experimental measurement of electrical resistance; she subsequently turned her careful experimental mind to the question of testing the veracity of claims for psychical phenomena. She was elected President of the Society for Psychical Research in 1908 and named 'president of honour' in 1932.

Original manuscript. 1-1/2 pages, written on card stock, 3.5" x 4.5", with the original stamped envelope. Very Good Bergson apologizes for his tardiness in thanking Lefevre for sending the last installment of his "Une heure avec.." Bergson blames his lag on a resurgence of his ailment, which makes it difficult, if not impossible, to use a pen. He mentions his pleasure in reading Lefevre's interesting, lively pieces, penetrating Picasso's privacy, etc. Signed, H. Bergson. [Lefevre edited "Les Nouvelles Letteraires," an artistic and literary journal, from 1922 to 1949.].

Creative Evolution (1907) is the text that made Bergson world-famous. It established him as the pre-eminent European philosopher for the next 10 years, influencing the course of intellectual development not only in philosophical circles but also in literature and the arts. For many, it became the central theoretical work for the first half of the Twentieth-Century, and it is arguable that it established the concept of time and its avatars (freedom, difference, creativity, the new), as the highest philosophical values for the next century of French thought. In this monumental work, Bergson takes the special theory of duration developed through Time and Free Will and Matter and Memory in the field of mind, and generalises it into a cosmology of life and matter in the field of evolution, of change in biological life. Tackling the concepts of evolution current at the time, Bergson shows how both mechanistic (Neo-Darwinian) and finalist (Neo-Lamarckian) theories of evolution fail to account for the diverse creativity of nature, especially speciation.
