Er behandelt die Rückwirkungen des Ersten Weltkrieges auf die europäische Innenpolitik von 1917 bis 1928 und beschreibt die unterschiedlichen Tableaus der politischen, sozialen, ökonomischen und ideologischen Veränderungen in Deutschland, Grossbritannien, Frankreich, Italien und der Sowjetunion. Die Kriegserfahrung war durch den Zusammenbruch herkömmlicher Sinnangebote, die Delegitimierung der angestammten Führungsschichten und eine breite politische Mobilisierung geprägt. Sie begründete eine Formveränderung der Politik, welche zu erheblichen sozialen und ökonomischen Belastungen führte und allenthalben mit populistischen Strategien sowie der Verstärkung korporativer Strukturen beantwortet wurde. Das Werk stellt einen ersten Baustein für den vom Arbeitskreis für moderne Sozialgeschichte e.V. bearbeiteten Grundriss einer "Sozialgeschichte Europas im 20. Jahrhundert" dar, welcher sich zur Aufgabe sesetzt, die Parameter für eine vergleichende europäische Geschichtsdarstellung im 20.
