This specific hardback book is in fine condition with a hard board cover that has sharp edges/corners with no bumping or scuffing and has a tight binding. The pages are clean, crisp, unmarked and uncreased with no underlining, highlighting, or notes. The dust jacket is in near fine condition with only the slightest bit of cover or edge wear and with a line drawn through the price on the dust jacket flap. We package all books in custom cardboard book boxes for shipment and ship daily with tracking numbers.; "The Fish can Sing (or, as it is known in Icelandic, The Annal of Brekkukot) is one of Laxness's finest and most intimate novels. It successfully weaves together several narrative threads: it is an orphan's lyrical coming-of-age story, a tragic tale of a "world-famous" singer, and a brilliant description of Reykjavik at the beginning of the 20th century, with its quaint combination of old values (as represented by the storyteller's grandparents) and and more modern influences. As in every Laxness book, the characters are colorful and imaginative, yet always true to life."; 8 X 5.70 X 1.20 inches; 287 pages. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket .

LAXNESS, HALLDOR
THE HAPPY WARRIORS
London, Methuen 1958, hb. 8vo, pp. 287. First published in Iceland in 1956 with the title "Gerpla", this is the first English language edition.
¶ Laxness was born in Reykyavik in 1902 and grew up on a farm. He published his first book "Child of Nature" in 1919. His two post-war novels, about life in Iceland, caused much controversy. However, in 1955 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. Our offering is a "a story of murder, revenge, and adventure in Iceland, Greenland, and Norway [which] is at the same time a well sustained satire on the classical Nordic saga." Our copy carries a blank bookplate on the inside of the front board, and a brief (non-authorial) Christmas inscription on the top left of the front free endpaper. The contents are clean, tight, and unmarked and the binding shows virtually no shelf wear: overall - in very good to near fine condition. The publisher's colourful dusk jacket (designed by David Watson) is present. The spine is a bit sunned and the bottom right corner of the front flap has been clipped. It shows minimal shelf wear and is in very good condition.
