THE HAPPY WARRIORS London, Methuen 1958, hb. 8vo, pp. 287. First published in Iceland in 1956 with the title "Gerpla", this is the first English language edition. ¶ Laxness was born in Reykyavik in 1902 and grew up on a farm. He published his first book "Child of Nature" in 1919. His two post-war novels, about life in Iceland, caused much controversy. However, in 1955 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. Our offering is a "a story of murder, revenge, and adventure in Iceland, Greenland, and Norway [which] is at the same time a well sustained satire on the classical Nordic saga." Our copy carries a blank bookplate on the inside of the front board, and a brief (non-authorial) Christmas inscription on the top left of the front free endpaper. The contents are clean, tight, and unmarked and the binding shows virtually no shelf wear: overall - in very good to near fine condition. The publisher's colourful dusk jacket (designed by David Watson) is present. The spine is a bit sunned and the bottom right corner of the front flap has been clipped. It shows minimal shelf wear and is in very good condition. Greenfield BooksBook number: 041706 USD 100.00 [Appr.: EURO 75.25 | £UK 63.25 | JP¥ 9933] Catalogue: Literature
