George Boole (1815–1864), mathematician and logician. ODNB ‘... Boole's contributions to mathematics were both characteristic of and important for the development of English mathematics in his time, for they were entirely guided by algebras of new kinds ... A dispute developed in the mid-1840s between the Scottish philosopher Sir William Hamilton and the English mathematician Augustus De Morgan over a certain extension of syllogistic logic which became called ‘quantification of the predicate’; it inspired Boole to write up his ideas on logic in a short book entitled The Mathematical Analysis of Logic (1847). Seven years later, he presented a much longer account [in the above work] today it is recognized as the more authoritative and substantial book, but at the time it gained even less attention than had his Analysis ...’ Book number: 193168 GBP 700.00 [Appr.: EURO 874 US$ 1097.43 | JP¥ 87178] Catalogue: MEDICINE: MATHEMATICS

A Treatise on the Calculus of Finite Differences. Second Edition. Ed. J F Moulton. London: Macmillan 1872. . 336p orig drak green cloth, gilt lettering to spine still bright, a well preserved copy of the second edition, which has recently been donated to a college library, which in turn affixed its small decorative bookplate, the booplate of the donor, and a discard stamp to the front endpaper. This process has allowed a small amount of adhesive to reach the free endpaper, which has suffered a small tear as a result. There is also a previous bookplate. Furthermore, three edges of the book have receiced an impression of the college stamp, which has also been doing its work on page 3 and then on page 30 of the publisher's catalogue in the back. Call it finite indifferences or infinite differences, the book has been through the hands of a librarian, and it for all to know. The paper for this edition has not been the best either, and it is yellowing somewhat, but for the rest this is a very nice copy, as good as they get.
