Bemiss claims in the preface that this is the first book printed in America on the subject. In fact the earliest title is The Country Dyer's Assistant, by Asa Ellis, Jr. published in 1798. Front cover detached. There is offsetting between pages 150 and 151, likely from a laid in leaf or flower. Still an early expansive and useful treatment of the subject. .

Alexander Pope was so encouraged by this work that it lead him to ask Fenton if he would assist in a translation of the Odyssey. Unfortunately, lacking the original frontispiece, although holding the original publisher's advertisements and dedication page. Adorned with beautifully engraved decorative head and tail pieces throughout. Rebacked in a calf binding with contemporary calf boards. Externally, light wear to the boards, as well as some minor evidence of past worming. Internally, firmly bound and delightfully bright. Generally clean, aside from the odd spot and handling mark. Elijah Fenton (1683-1730) was an English poet and translator. He assisted Alexander Pope in his renowned translation of Homer's Odyssey.Thomas Tickell (1685-1740) was an English poet and man of letters; he was a friend of Joseph Addison. He translated the first book of the Iliad.Thomas Warton (1728-1790) was an English literary historian and poet, appointed Poet Laureate in 1785. He is best known for the poem 'The Pleasures of Melancholy', the son of poet Thomas Warton the Elder and brother of literary critic Joseph Warton.Illustrated with vignette engravings, as well as three full plates. Collated.Three volumes bound as one. Undated; dated from copies on Jisc. In a half calf binding. Externally very smart, with a little wear to the extremities and a few instances of loss to the leather of the spine. Ownership bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Tokyo, Rokyukan 1864 (Genji 1). Two volumes 26x18cm publisher's embossed yellow wrappers with printed labels (front cover of the first volume marked or dusty, the label incomplete); 56 & 48 leaves (ie 208pp in all); five full page maps with colour and a fair quantity of small maps, some with colours; woodcut illustrations. A rather good copy, quite fresh inside.
¶ First edition of the adaptation by Mitsukuri Genpo of the American missionary Bridgman's Da Mei lian bang zhi lue published in Shanghai in 1861 or 62; this was reprinted in 1871. The Shanghai version has been wrongly claimed as the first account of the United States in Chinese - but it's sort of true as it is a revision of Meilige heshengguo zhilue published by Bridgman in Singapore in 1838. For the Japanese this is their first thorough and ostensibly trustworthy account, written as it is by an actual American. I should make it clear that this is an account of the United States, not of the Americas. The first volume is general, covering history, government, education, culture ... and the second volume zooms in on individual states illustrated by a number of small local maps. It is the first account of American democratic government for the Japanese. I can't tell you how Mitsukuri dealt with Bridgman's reformist proselytising but anything produced by Mitsukuri carried a lot of weight. A physician by early training he was a scholar of the west and pioneered the introduction of western science, medicine and technology (like the first description of a steam engine) into Japan, usually via the Dutch or Chinese, and served as translator for the Perry mission in 1853.
