Die stelling verdedigde de gerenommeerde cultuurhistoricus Willem Frijhoff in 1998 bij aantreden als hoogleraar aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in zijn oratie heiligen, idolen en iconen. Zijn afscheid wegens het bereiken van de 65-jarige leeftijd op 31 mei 2007 is een goede aanleiding om nog eens terug te komen op deze intrigerende thematiek. In deze bundel passen dertig leerlingen van Frijhoff het concept van de 'alledaagse voorbeeldigheid' toe op een door hen gekozen persoon uit het verleden. ¶ Developments in church-state relationships in north-western Europe between 1780 and 1920 had a substantial impact on reformist ideas, projects and movements within the churches. To which extent did church and state mutually influence each other in matters concerning ecclesiastical reform? How and why did they do so?
