MCELDOWNEY, RICHARD DENNIS
The World Regained
New Zealand, Auckland University Press. 2001, 2nd Edition. (ISBN: 1869402537) Soft Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Autobiographical account of a "Blue baby" . His early life as an invalid and miraculous survival of a critical heart operation. Dennis vividly describes the joys and terrors of discovering the outside world and the people in it, especially the fact that our everyday world was not there for the taking but had to be grappled with. In telling his story he reveals unusual perception, warmth and a wry sense of humour. This is a most appealing and moving human story. WISNIOWSKI, SYGURD. EDITED, INTRODUCED &TRANSLATED FROM THE POLISH BY DENNIS MCELDOWNEY .
Tikera or Children of the Queen of Oceania
Auckland University Press / Oxford University Press. 1972, First English Language Edition. Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall. pp 311. Unclipped jacket heavily sunned on spine & edges, light edgewear. Book has polish writing on bottom of title page, possibly by gifter. Firdt published in 1877, although 'it is the best New Zealand novel of this period, it has had no influence on the development of writing in this country. Why? Because Tikera was written, and published, in Polish..Through the candid eyes of a young Polish seaman we see the country at the time of the Anglo-Maori wars. We see the dingy waterfront pubs in the old-looking young town of Auckland, life in a Maori village which was debating whether to join the war, a New Plymouth dividing its attention between military campaigns and dubious commercial speculation, the unlovely attitude of settlers towards the Maoris (sic), and particularly towards Maori women. Although wisniowski was in New Zealand in the 1860s, he did not visit the war districts. This part of his novel is immaginary. But he knew his Anglo-Saxon colonists and draws an often irreverent view of their society.'. Very Good/Good Plus.
