DAVIES, Robertson
Murther & Walking Spirits
London, Sinclair-Stevenson, 1991. Hardcover. pp. 357.8vo,,,This is a special issue of the first edition of this title, 150 copies only being bound from the sheets of the first trade edition, each of which is numbered (this being #20) and signed by Davies in his characteristic fashion on a cancel title page bearing the imprint of London Limited Editions. There is virtually no information easily available about this imprint, but it appears that it was an off-shoot of the London bookseller and publisher, Bertram Rota Limited, as the address and telephone number for London Limited Editions are the same as that for Bertram Rota (31 Long Acre, Covent Garden, London), and they are well known for their speciality in modern first editions. It also appears that these limited editions were only issued from 1985 to 1994, each title being bound similarly (but quite differently from the trade edition), the style being half cloth over marbled boards, with the author, title, and series name being lettered and boxed in gilt to the spine. The book is enclosed in the original delicate glassine wrapper, and both are in near fine condition with no visible flaws, save for a small wrinkle to the base of the spine of the wrapper. .

Robertson Davies
The Papers of Samuel Marchbanks
Penguin 1990 Paperback, 560pp. In this collection of his newspaper pieces, mostly from the late Forties, Davies introduces us to his alter ego, a mildly irascible curmudgeon whose opinions and observations have been so popular in Canada that three volumes of his columns have been published there: The Diary , The Table Talk , and The Garland of Miscellania. Davies has re-edited them to produce a single volume and in the prefatory 'A Drink with Marchbanks' even given us his own view of the journalist he created. A pleasant entertainment covering such diverse topics as politics, theater, and manners, this volume offers a humorous and insightful picture of postwar Canadian life as seen through the eyes of a delightful eccentric who reminds this reader of a boozeless W. C. Fields. (ISBN: 9780140097719). Fair.
