(vol. 1, text): (4), cxv, 1-439; (vol. 2, text): (4), 441-950; (vol. 3, text): (4), lxxxiv, 1-691; (vols. 4-6, atlas of plates): (4), 27, 530 fine hand-colored lithographed plates. Uniform contemporary green morocco by Clarke and Bedford, covers with triple fillet border, with the centrally-placed gilt-blocked crests of Earl Fitzwilliam surmounted by an earls' coronet, spines in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in gilt in the second and third compartments, the others with repeat decoration in gilt, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges in gilt, 8vo. The text is a second edition of Temminck's important handbook first published in 1815. It is here greatly enlarged ""to include some of the non-European avifauna, and to furnish descriptions or mention of species new to science"" (Wood, p. 593). The atlas of plates was produced by Werner, a natural history artist at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris, as an adjunct to Temminck's work. These plates were produced as illustrations to accompany the second edition of Temminck's ‘Manuel d'Ornithologie' as a handbook to the birds of Europe (Wood, p. 622). The atlas of plates was published by subscription in 53 separate parts each with 10 plates - the total number of plates in the work is 530. The first atlas volume in this copy contains the 31 pages of preliminary materials (title page, contents and list of depicted species) which is sometimes lacking. These works by Temminck and Werner are complimentary and are offered together. Very light foxing to the first and last few leaves of the first volume of text, similar light foxing to the preliminary text pages that accompany the first atlas volume, occasional light spotting to about 12 plates in the atlas volumes, one plate of ‘Plongeon Imbrin' is discolored on the verso only, the rest of the text and fine color plates are bright, clean and free from any foxing or browning. An exceptional copy in near fine condition in a spectacular period binding..
