Lightly toned, a bit of intermittent dampmarking, old ownership inscription abraded from title and the wear neatly reinforced (with slight loss from three characters), half-title a bit dusty. Modern calf in period style, red morocco label. Purchase inscription of W. Howley, May 18th, 1794 to half-title. The second and best printing of Heinsius’s edition of Clement of Alexandria, first published in 1616 and based on, though improving, Sylburg’s 1592 edition.

Slight foxing, very good copies in 19th-cent. marbled paper and black vellum-tipped boards, spines of tan sheep gilt, slightly rubbed but very good, all edges yellow. Bookplates and blind embossments of Cheshunt College Library. Bookseller's label of J. Leslie, Theological Bookseller, 52 Great Queen Street, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London. Good copy of this Venice reprint of the celebrated edition (1715) of the 2nd/3rd-cent. theologian Clement of Alexandria, by John Potter (1674-1747), Oxford professor, Bishop of Oxford and sometime Archbishop of Canterbury, it is noted by Hoffmann (see below) to be much expanded from the earlier edition. Like others of the books here, perhaps a truly ecumenical copy (and printing), coming from the nonconformist Cheshunt College, Herts., yet also being a Greek author edited by an Anglican and printed in a Catholic land! His early Protrepticus is of great significance for Patristics, Classical scholarship, Greek philosophy and religion. The treatise is preserved virtually in a single manuscript --the famous Codex Arethae, Parisinus graecus 451, copied in 913-914,-- which proves to be lacunose, corrupt, interpolated and dislocated. The only critical edition of the Protrepticus was prepared back in 1905 by Otto Stahlin (G.C.S, Volume 12). The present edition is based on a thorough in-depth study of the Parisinus, on the inclusion of the entire opus of Clement, on an extended and updated Quellenforschung, and finally, on a more sensitive approach to meaning and textual criticism.
