Deze monografie geeft een beeld van de ontwikkelingen in het werk dat de schilder Jan Mulder vanaf 1994 maakte. Hoewel zijn werk abstract oogt en bij eerste aanblik geen relatie lijkt te hebben met de werkelijkheid, geldt ook hier dat schijn bedriegt. Het gebruik van kleuren en accenten in licht en donker zoals weergegeven in onder andere de reeks schilderijen 'Am Rande der Nacht', geeft de overgang weer van schemering naar donker, van dag naar nacht. Een tijdstip waarop de schaduwen langer worden, het licht bijna per minuut vernadert van kleur en intensiteit en vormen steeds andere gedaanten aannemen. Dat is ook het hoofdmotief in het werk van jan Mulder. Expressieve schilderijen waarin de kleuren geel en zwart of rose en zwart worden gecombineerd en waarin door het aanbrengen van terpentijn gradaties groen en paars de compositie mede bepalen.
