The Animal Factory
Dell, 1979. Mass Market Paperback. Good. Spine creased, pages toned. 1979 Mass Market Paperback. 268 pp. "Rom Decker was a white-collar criminal -- well-manicured and wet behind the ears when the prison gates slammed behind him. But he was also lucky. The king of the pen, tough old con Earl Copen decided to take the kid under his wing, teach him the ropes, teach him to stay alive: how to survive gang rape, homosexuality, murder, and the race wars that raged every day in the Animal Factory. It was all part of the con game. It was expected. But there were other things inside he never expected, things like loyalty and sacrifice. And they were the hardest of all things to handle.".

BUNKER, EDWARD
The Animal Factory (Signed).
New York, Viking Press, 1977. First edition / First printing. Hardcover. Octavo. A near fine copy in a near fine dust jacket. A common theme in ex-con Eddie Bunker's writing centers on men being pulled into crime at a very young age and the subsequent hardening of their character through early adulthood by a callous and uncaring society. "The Animal Factory" is a prison novel that delves deep into San Quentin State Prison society, a world of violence and paranoia, where territory and status are ever-changing and possibly fatal commodities. Crime fiction came natural for Bunker and it was during his last internment, in 1975, that he discovered his writer's voice and penned "No Beast So Fierce." It debuted to critical acclaim and was turned into the 1978 film, "Straight Time" starring Dustin Hoffman. ~Adapted for film in 2000 by John Steppling and Bunker, "The Animal Factory" tops a long list of prison movies for its realistic portrayal of the subculture that runs throughout prison life. Directed by and co-starring Steve Buscemi, the film also stars Edward Furlong, Williem Dafoe, and Mickey Rourke. As an actor, Bunker performed in more than 20 films, but it was writing that he truly loved (having also penned the screenplay for cult-classic film, "Runaway Train" in 1985. Novelist, screenwriter, actor, ex-con, Bunker died July 26, 2005 at the age of 71. ~SIGNED and inscribed on the half-title page by the author: "To Tony B. A good dude. Eddie Bunker." A near fine copy with a slight slant to spine, and light foxing to page-block, in a near fine jacket with edge-wear to foot of spine and a short closed tear to head of spine, barely noticeable.

New York: St. Martin's Press, 1996. First Edition. Hardcover. Illustrated by (dj design) Charles Rue Woods & Marc Montalto. [nice tight fresh copy, no discernible wear to either book or jacket, but some intermittent fading to black cloth at spine (not sure how that could have happened, since to my knowledge the jacket has never been off this book!); NO remainder or other marks]. "Carved from a lifetime of experience that runs the gamut from incarceration to liberation, [this book] is the story of three men who are all out of prison and now have the task of adapting themselves to civilian life. The California three strikes law looms over them, but what the hell, they're going to do it, and they're going to do it their way."
