BILL MANHIRE (ED)
100 New Zealand Poems
Auckland, Godwit. 1994. Softcover , 23.5cm. Just a slight bump to upper right corner o/wise it's a beaut - unpaginated but say 150 with notes at end. 100 New Zealand Poems is a journey through the hearts and histories and landscapes of New Zealand - from the country's earliest poems to work by new poets of the 1990s.100 New Zealand Poems is an ideal source book for students of New Zealand literature of all ages but will also be a delightful read for anyone with more than a passing interest in poetry. The poems have been chosen by Bill Manhire, who also contributes an introduction and notes on each of the 100 selections. nice review here >> Bill Manhire has done a standout job of selecting and grouping 100 New Zealand poems by 100 New Zealand poets. I'd say about 60 to 70% of them resonated with me, which is a stellar strike-rate for poems. No doubt the challenging and worthy have been omitted to make this collection accessible. It worked. Very Good/None issued.

Some Other Country: New Zealand's Best Short Stories - Third Edition
Bridget Williams Books 1997 Paperback, 450pp. "The country to be found in these pages is not the place depicted in glossy picture books or economic profiles. But it is a real place, composed of that blend of accuracy and vision which only the imagination, committed to language and experience, can supply. It is the New Zealand of Janet Frame and Katherine Mansfield, of Dan Davin and Frank Sargeson, of Witi Ihimaera and Patricia Grace. Some Other Country is a collection of stories from the body of New Zealand writing that began with the work of the young expatriate writer, Katherine Mansfield. It includes recent work by Vincent O'Sullivan, Owen Marshall and Keri Hulme and stories by newer writers such as Barbara Anderson, John Cranna and Emily Perkins, alongside well-known stories by Joy Cowley, C. MANHIRE, BILL
Collected poems
Carcanet Press Ltd. 2001. Paperback. Pp: 303. Containing select works from eight previous collections, this work covers the expanse of Bill Manhire's distinguished career in poetry. Obsessed with barren landscapes, Manhire writes in twisting, threatening stanzas and syntax. Manhire's experience with hands-on work in the field lends to his poetry's brash, potent style. His travels to the South Pole and the Norse Sagas drive his work as he continues to be an explorer of language. Cond./Kwaliteit: Goed.
