Lateinische Übersetzung des "alkanun fil tebb", einem sehr ausführlich und im Detail ausgearbeitetem System der Medizin, das bis zum Ende des XV. Jahrhunderts als das vollständigste u. beste galt. Der Kanon setzt sich aus 5 Büchern zusammen, die wiederum in mehrere Abschnitte u. diese wieder in weitere kleinere Unterabteilungen aufgegliedert sind. Im ersten Buch wird die Anatomie u. Physiologie abgehandelt, im zweiten die Arzneimittellehre, im dritten die Krankheiten vom Kopf bis zu den Füssen, im vierten die Fieber und im fünften die Lehre von den zusammengesetzten Arzneien. Vorliegend die ersten drei Bücher einer Ausgabe, die der Nachdruck einer Ebenda bereits 1595 erschienenen ist. Der Kanon ist hier nach der ersten, später von Andrea Alpago durchgesehnen, lateinische Übersetzung durch Gerardo da Cremona, von Giovanni Costeo u. Giovanni Paolo Mongio erneut durchgesehen und in den Anmerkungen von Costeo vermehrt, welcher als Herausgeber betrachtet werden muss. Und nicht wie fälschlich Fabius Paulinus. Paulinus ist zwar auf dem Titel genannt, aber nur als Verfasser der Tabellen über "Johanitii isagoge" (mit eigenem Tit.) und der ebenfalls tabellarischen "Oeconomiae librorum canonis" (Vgl. dazu Choulant). Die ersten 8 Bll. enthalten u.a. Aufsätze zur Verteidigung Avicennas (v. F. Paulinus) u. Avicennas Vita (v. Nicola Massa, die bereits in Ausg. v. 1562 abgedruckt war). Die 16 auf dem Frontispiz als Rahmen angeordneten Vignetten sowie die 6 (in der Titelei enthaltenen) Illustrationen zeigen einen Arzt bei der Praxis. Der Kanon ist zweispaltig gesetzt. Abu Ali al-Husain ibn Sina-e Balkhi od. latinisiert AVICENNA (um 980-1037); persischer Azt, Physiker und Philosoph. Um 980 in Afschana bei Bukhara (heute Usbekistan, damals Persien) als Sohn eines aus Balch (heute Afghanistan) stammenden ismailitischen Gelehrten geboren. Als Kind zeigte er früh eine überdurchschnittliche Intelligenz; mit 10 Jahren soll er schon den Koran u. einige philologische Bücher auswendig gekonnt haben. Er studierte Rechtswissenschaften, Philosophie sowie Physik und wandte sich im Alter von 17 Jahren der Medizin zu. A. hatte die Möglichkeit, die Bibliothek des Sultans zu benutzen, nachdem er zu Rate gezogen wurde, als dieser erkrankt war. Mit 18 Jahren hatte er seine Studien beendet und übernahm das Amt eines Präfekten u. Zehnteneinnehmers. Nach dem Tod des Vaters ging er über Umwege nach Dschordschan, wo er Vorlesungen hielt. Später übersiedelte er nach Ray, in der Nähe des heutigen Teheran, um als Arzt zu praktizieren. Es folgte ein Aufenthalt in Hamadan, wo er den Emir Schems ad Daula von einer Kolik heilte und danach zum Wesir ernannt wurde. Nach dem Tode des Emirs verlor er sein Amt als Wesir und wurde, weil er mit dem Gesetz in Konflikt gekommen war, gefangen genommen. Die letzten 14 Jahre seines Lebens verbrachte A. als Leibarzt und wissenschaftlicher Berater am Hofe des Emirs von Isfahan. Aufgrund seines ausschweifenden Lebenswandels, starb er im Alter von 58 Jahren. Er hatte eine sehr ausgedehnte literarische Wirksamkeit entfaltet und zahlreiche Schriften in mehreren Gebieten der Wissenschaft verfasst. Darunter umfassende Arbeiten im Bereich der Philosophie, Medizin, Logik, Ethik und Metaphysik. Neben den vorwiegend in Arabisch abgefassten Werken, schrieb er auch einige in seiner Muttersprache Persisch.

Abu Ali al-Husain ibn Abdallah ibn Sina (Avicenna) Born: 980 in Kharmaithen (near Bukhara), Central Asia (now Uzbekistan) Died: June 1037 in Hamadan, Persia (now Iran) Ibn Sina is often known by his Latin name of Avicenna, although most references to him today have reverted to using the correct version of ibn Sina. We know many details of his life for he wrote an autobiography which has been supplemented with material from a biography written by one of his students. The autobiography is not simply an account of his life, but rather it is written to illustrate his ideas of reaching the ultimate truth, so it must be carefully interpreted. The course of ibn Sina's life was dominated by the period of great political instability through which he lived. The Samanid dynasty, the first native dynasty to arise in Iran after the Muslim Arab conquest, controlled Transoxania and Khorasan from about 900. Bukhara was their capital and it, together with Samarkand, were the cultural centres of the empire. However, from the middle of the 10th century, the power of the Samanid's began to weaken. By the time ibn Sina was born, Nuh ibn Mansur was the Sultan in Bukhara but he was struggling to retain control of the empire. Ibn Sina's father was the governor of a village in one of Nuh ibn Mansur's estates. He was educated by his father, whose home was a meeting place for men of learning in the area. Certainly ibn Sina was a remarkable child, with a memory and an ability to learn which amazed the scholars who met in his father's home. By the age of ten he had memorised the Qur'an and most of the Arabic poetry which he had read. When ibn Sina reached the age of thirteen he began to study medicine and he had mastered that subject by the age of sixteen when he began to treat patients. He also studied logic and metaphysics, receiving instruction from some of the best teachers of his day, but in all areas he continued his studies on his own. In his autobiography (see [7] or [9]) ibn Sina stresses that he was more or less self-taught but that at crucial times in his life he received help.
