Anneke van Veen, conservator fotografie van het Amsterdamse Gemeentearchief, beschrijft het leven en de werkzaamheden van Jacob Olie Jbz. (1834-1905), die een oeuvre van ruim 3000 glasnegatieven plus een massa albumine - en andere drukken naliet, die thans in beheer zijn bij dit archief. Olie was aanvankelijk bouwkundige, later tekenmeester en directeur van de Ambachtsschool. Zijn eerste opnamen uit 1861 zijn nog gemaakt op de primitieve wijze der pas uitgevonden techniek. Zijn architectonische aanleg inspireerde hem tot composities die later van grote cultuurhistorische betekenis werden. Hij legde de ontwikkeling en de groei der stad vast als achtergrond van het leven en doen van de bewoners. Zodoende werd hij een nauwkeurig, tevens geïnspireerd chroniqueur van stad en bewoners. Bewonderenswaardig zijn zijn stereo- en panoramaopnamen en de bijzondere atmosferische lichtval. Daarvan getuigen in dit boek niet alleen de 125 groot afgedrukte en grafisch perfect verzorgde foto's, maar ook de honderden kleinere opnamen. Geschreven tekst op voortitelpagina. Verder in goede staat verkerend.
