Deze intrigerende en vermakelijke Argentijnse roman is gebaseerd op het leven van de gerenommeerde, zestiende-eeuwse Venetiaanse anatoom Matteo Colombo, ofwel Colombus, die net als zijn illustere naamgenoot een grote ontdekking doet, met vérstrekkende gevolgen. De roman beweegt zich rond Matteo Colombo's toevallige vondst van een niet eerder in kaart gebracht deel van het vrouwelijk lichaam - de kleitoris. Matteo Colombo is verliefd op de Venetiaanse prostituee Monna Sofia. In een poging haar voor zich te winnen, experimenteert hij met lustopwekkende brouwsels die hij, helaas zonder het gewenste resultaat, test op een aantal hoeren. Dan wordt Matteo Colombo op een dag bij de schone, doch kwijnende weduwe Doña Inés geroepen. Hij onderzoekt haar en ziet tot zijn verbazing een soort penis die, hoewel klein, onweerlegbaar rechtop staat. Bij beroering van het mysterieuze orgaan ontwaakt in Doña Inés een tomeloze passie. En zo stuit Matteo Colombo bij toeval op het instrument waarmee hij ook Mona Sofia's liefde hoopt te kunnen opwekken. Maar Matteo Colombo is behalve minnaar ook wetenschapper en wil zijn spectaculaire vondst publiceren. Hierdoor komt deze ook de Inquisitie ter ore, die hem verbiedt zijn ontdekking openbaar te maken. Immers, welke calamiteiten zouden het christendom niet te wachten staan indien de duivel zich meester zou maken van het vrouwelijk orgaan van de zonde? Een proces tegen Matteo Colombo kan niet uitblijven..
