NICHOLAS NICKLEBY. A Farce, In Two Acts. As Performed at the Royal Adelphi Theatre. Taken from the Popular Work of that Name, by "Boz". Illustrated with an Engraving, by Pierce Egan The Younger. [bound in] The ACTING NATIONAL DRAMA. Volume IV.
London: Chapman & Hall, [n. d.]. 12mo. 7" x 4-1/4". 1st thus (Bolton, NN 1; Gimbel C47; Kitton, DICKENSIANA 464; VanderPoel B144 [for the later Samuel French edition]). Ca 1838. 36 pp for 'Nickleby'. Divers paginations for the remaining 9. NB. The Stirling piece known to have been published in Volume V of Acting National Drama series; the beginning t.p for this volume states "IV", which, coupled with the list of titles not present therein, indicates it was mis-bound. 19th C. green cloth with black leather spine label (cased in the late 1840s)., VG+ (slt lean/usual light foxing/occasional period pos). Frontis to 'Nickleby', 'Swains', 'Dilworth', 'Fritz' & 'Questions' by Pierce Egan the Younger. 'Barrack Room' frontis not signed.
¶ Dickens known to have twice attended this dramatic adaptation by Stirling [produced when NN only a third complete], and though he, on general principle, objected to any adaptation of an unfinished work, for this particular effort, he termed it "admirably done." [cf. Pilgrim Letters I, pp. 463-4]. This scarce piece of Dickensiana the second title in a bound collection of 10 individual pre-1850 C. dramatic works. In addition to the 'Nickleby', there is 'The Swiss Swains' [Webster. London: ca 1837]; 'Doctor Dilworth' [Oxenford. London: ca 1839]; 'The Court of Old Fritz' [Smith. London, ca 1839]; 'Ask No Questions' [Selby. London: ca 1838]; 'The Irish Post' [Planche. London: 1846]; 'The Jacobite' [Planche. London, ca 1847]; 'Which Is The King? [Watts.
