CURNOW, ALLEN. EDITED AND WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY PETER SIMPSON
Look Back Harder. Critical Writings 1935 - 1984
Auckland, Auckland University Press. 1987, First Edition. (ISBN: 1869400100) Soft Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall. pp 337. Rubbed at front corners, pale fox to foredges, small amount of marginalia. Perhaps rather better than it sounds. '.gathers for the first time most of Allen Curnow's critical writing - manifestos, essays, reviews, dialogues, prefaces, lectures, interviews, tributes, letters. Hiss criticism, for nearly half a century, has been the benchmark for other critical writing in New Zealand; so much of that has been reaction to Curnow signposts - in agreement or in (often slightly awed) disagreement. This volume allows the reader to study, side by side, Curnow's continuingly controversial introductory essays to his verse anthologies, and guage, with editor Peter Simpson's help, the extent of misreading and misrepresentation that they have suffered. Here, too, are incisive essays on most of Curnow's notable New Zealand contemporaries.'. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall. Good Plus - Very Good.

Valley of Decision: Poems by Allen Curnow
Auckland: Auckland University College Students' Association Press, 1933. First Edition. Softcover. No signatures. Light foxing. Some rubbing and discolouration to paper spine and string binding. A well preserved copy.; Scarce. Pages unnumbered. 23 poems. The author's first book, published when he was 22 years old. Some of the poems had earlier been published in "Kiwi", "Phoenix", and "Art in New Zealand". The Auckland Students' Association Press was run by Bob Lowry and Ronald Holloway. Lowry's operation of the press and production of the "Phoenix" journal (which had 4 issues in total in its short life), was "proscribed" by the university authorities, after which Lowry moved south to Christchurch. "Valley of Decision" was published as "Phoenix Miscellany: 1". In a note to a collection of his poetry published in 1974, Curnow wrote of this title: "In 'Valley of Decision', and after it, some crisis or change from faith to scepticism may be read, however perplexed and precarious the faith was, and the scepticism no less so." [References: Robinson and Wattie, "The Oxford Companion to New Zealand Literature"(1998)].; 8vo. Very Good with no dust jacket .

ALLEN CURNOW AND TERRY STURM
"Whim Wham's New Zealand: the Best of Whim Wham, 1937-1988"
Random House New Zealand 2005 Paperback, 224pp. "Whim Wham was the pen-name of the major New Zealand poet Allen Curnow. His highly entertaining verses, commencing in the Christchurch Press in 1937 and in the New Zealand Herald from 1951, voiced the awkward questions so many New Zealanders wanted to ask. Whim Wham became a Saturday institution and required reading for generations of New Zealanders. His astute observations and wry take on New Zealand events offer invaluable insights for readers today. He captured New Zealanders' reactions to world affairs from Franco and Hitler to Vietnam and South Africa, as well as covering the local political scene from Walter Nash to the eras of Robert Muldoon and David Lange. With humorous renderings of our rugby obsession and ruminations on the state of the nation's teeth, Professor Terry Sturm's selection of the best 200 verses offers a wonderfully unique record of over fifty years of this country's recent past. ", (ISBN: 9781869417574). Good.
