CLELAND, RALPH E. [ERSKINE] AND ALBERT F. BLAKESLEE.
Three Offprints: 1) Circle Formation in Datura and Oenothera, 1930. 2) Interaction between Complexes As Evidence for Segmental Interchange in Oenothers, 1930. 3) Segmental Interchange, the Basis of Chromosomal Attachments in Oenothera, 1931.
1930.. Paperback. Three Very Good+ Offprints, Two Bound Together, in Original Printed Wrappers with Faint Inkstamp Front Covers, Pencil Marks Front Covers, Tear and Small Piece Missing Spine of No. 3. 8vos. Published in: 1) and 2) the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Vol. 16, Vol. 3, Pp. 177-189, March, 1930. 3) Cytologia, Vol. 2, No. 3: 175-233, 1931. Very Good+, When John Belling explained circle formation in Datura stramonium as the result of exchanges of segments between nonhomologous chromosomes, Cleland recognized that this concept of segmental interchange could be applied to Oenthera. He developed a scheme in which the chromosome complement of each Oenothera strain could be identified by the arrangement of its fourteen chromosome ends. He showed that if the arrangement of two genomes was known, when they were combined in a hybrid, the chromosome configuration at meiosis of the hybrid could be predicted. Further, Cleland recognized that similarity in the segmental arrangement of the genomes in different strains of Oenothera could serve as an index of phylogenetic relationship.
