Title vignettes; head- and tail-pieces; initials. 2 volumes out of three volume ! 1744 Abraham Trembley discovered in 1744 fission (multiplication by subdivision) in protozoa .... Famous Swiss naturalist. This is his work on the Christian education of children also in science. vol 1 + 2 out of three.

Durand: Paris, 1744 2 vols: (4),xix,(1),310; (4),351,(3), 20 folding engraved plates. sm. 8vo, HB. Cont. calf, spines gilt with raised bands, marbled end-papers. Some rubbing, minor wear to head of spines & corners; joints beginning to crack, but quite firm. Nice set. Book-plates of Charles Atwood Kofoid and Herbert McClean Evans. This edition, published in France, was pirated from the first edition published in Leiden in the same year (which had only 13 plates). 'Trembley was one of the pioneers of experimental morphology. [This] work records how he cut hydras into several pieces, producing new individuals, and how, by cutting up the latter, he obtained a third generation. His experiments were of great importance to the study of regeneration of lost parts, he was the first to make permanent grafts and to witness cell-division' (Garrison-Morton). [Nissen ZBI 4163].

Some rubbing + scuffing, minor wear to corners. Wide margins. Vg. Book-plate of the French entomologist, Jules Kunckel d'Herculais (1843-1918). The binder's slip, for M. Kunckel, is still tipped in opposite the preface (p. iii). 1st edition. Very scarce. 'Trembley was one of the pioneers of experimental morphology.
