Zosimi ... Historia nova, ex recensione F. SYLBURGII, cum latina interpretatione J. LEUNCLAVII, & notis variorum, accurante Chr. CELLARIO. Cizae (Zeitz), Sumtu I. Bielki, 1679. (Bound with:) Breviarium Sex. Rufi (vel Rufi Festi) de victoriis ac provinciis populi romani, ad Valentinianum Augustum; cum annotationibus Chr. CELLARI. Cizae (Zeitz), sumtu I. Bielki, 1678. 8vo. Frontispiece. (40),(48),670,(34) p. Vellum 18 cm - - VD17 3:000176D; Hoffmann III,624/25; Brunet 5,1542; Ebert 24268, erroneously dating 1699. - - Frontispiece, title in red & black; Greek text with facing Latin translation. - - Vellum slightly spotted; paper browning; some old ink annotations; the Breviarium, counting 48 p., has erroneously been bound after the preliminary pages of the Zosimus edition; some hardly noticable worming in the margin of gathering C, not coming near the text. - - Zosimus, second half fifth century, wrote a Roman history, up to 410; He used good sources, and shows historical insight. The fall of Rome was caused, he thinks, by the neglect of the pagan gods. Sandys holds Sylburg, 1536-1596, in high esteem: 'a thorough knowledge of Greek, considerable critical acumen, and an intelligent application of great powers of work were the characteristics of F. Sylburg'. The last 5 years of his life he settled at Heidelberg, working for the press of Commelinus. Every one of his editions is distinguished by important corrections of the text. (Sandys II,270). The Latin translation of the German scholar Leunclavius, Hans Loewenclau, 1533?-1593, was first published in Basel in 1576, 5 years before the editio princeps of the Greek text. He translated late antique and byzantine writers. Christoph Cellarius, 1638-1707, is best known for his works on grammar and style, on ancient history and the geography of the ancient world. (Sandys II,369). - - Collation: pi1 *-2*8 (- *8) 3*4; (A-C8); A-O8 P4 Q-2X8 2Y4. Zosimou kometos kai apophiskosynegorou Iistorias neas bibloi 'ex. Zosimi Comitis & Exadvocati Fisci, Historiae novae Libri Sex, Notis Illustrati. Oxonii, E Theatro Sheldoniano, Anno 1679. 1679 . Octavo, 192x114mm. In contemporary mid-tan calf binding, minimally abraded, with triple blind-ruled panel on both boards with decorative floral corner pieces, all accentuated in black. Recently re-backed in matching colour and style. All edges speckled red; 'Zosimus Gr' manuscript on foredge in excellent contemporary calligraphy. Bookplate 'Cathedral Library | Ely' in upper half of front pastedown laid over an earlier ownership label which itself appears to cover an earlier inscription; a more modern bookplate beneath reads: 'Justinian | Ex Libris | Rudolf Graupner'. [9], 2-384 pages; Signatures: a4, A-3B4. Title-page has first eight words of title in Greek characters; small hole (paper fault?) in vignette of Sheldonian Theatre, with small manuscript symbol below. Lower foredge corner torn away from a3 'Praefatio ad Lectorem', just touching text on recto. Tear in 2Z1, near gutter margin, without loss - again, looks like a paper fault. Text in Greek and Latin in double columns throughout. Includes bibliographical references. Neat marginalia, some in ink, some in pencil. Contents crisp, clean and tight. Wing (CD-ROM, 1996), Z15.
