Maar dit boek biedt veel meer. Het biedt het prachtig vertaalde dagboek van tijdgenoot Galbert van Brugge, die het allemaal meemaakte: de arrogantie van een opgeklommen horige familie -de aanleiding tot het misdrijf-, de moord zelf, de wraak van de adel, de opportunistische handelingen van de Franse en Engelse koning, de eigenbelangen van de Vlaamse kooplieden en tenslotte de straf voor de zondaars. Opmerkelijk was vooral, dat de gedachte opkwam dat men zich van zijn vorst kon losmaken als die zich niet aan zijn verplichtingen hield: de eerste opflakkering van wat men later democratie zou gaan noemen. Een historische inleiding en een bespreking van het toenmalige Brugge, stamboom, kaarten en plattegronden verhelderen de tekst. De zwartwitillustraties zijn aardig maar minder functioneel. Een zeer boeiend, helder geschreven boek voor historici, studenten en liefhebbers. Rug niet perfect. ISBN: 9789061526865. Cond./Kwaliteit: Goed.

He is most remembered for his murder and its aftermath. He was noted for his kindness and generosity towards the poor, and during a time of famine he distributed bread to them. He also took action to prevent grain from being hoarded and sold at excessively high prices. Some of those engaged in that activity then conspired to kill Charles, which they accomplished at the Church of St. Donatian in Bruges. The murder of the popular Charles provoked a great deal of outrage, and he was soon regarded as a martyr and saint.. Very Good .
