BOOK SALES CATALOGUES OF THE DUTCH REPUBLIC, 1599-1800
Instalment 18 of the microfiche project 'Book Sales Catalogues of the Dutch Republic, 1599-1800' has recently been published. It contains the catalogues 3098-3262.
The project 'Book Sales Catalogues of the Dutch Republic, 1599-1800' of the Department of Dutch Language and Literature of Leiden University was initiated by the late Professor Bert van Selm, and is now being executed by H.W. de Kooker (Leiden), with the cooperation of Dr. J.A. Gruys (Royal Library, The Hague) and IDC Publishers (Leiden).
The project aims at tracing and recording all surviving copies of all Dutch book sales catalogues printed before 1801, in order to microfilm one copy of each edition for publication on microfiche and, finally, to compile a bibliography with a census of all extant copies. At present, copies of c. 4350 catalogues have been traced: 3200 auction catalogues of private libraries and anonymous collections, and 1150 wholesale and retail catalogues of printers, publishers and booksellers as well as some minor or peripheral categories (whether for an auction or not).
The largest collections of pre-1801 Dutch book sales catalogues are in Amsterdam (Library of the Dutch Book Trade Association, in Amsterdam University Library, c. 950), Paris (Bibliotheque Nationale de France, c. 950), St. Petersburg (National Library of Russia, c. 830) and Wolfenbuttel (Herzog August Library, c. 800 catalogues). The holdings of these libraries have been filmed already, as have those of most Dutch libraries: 3262 catalogues in all.
The instalments of microfiches issued by IDC Publishers (Leiden) are accompanied by a printed Guide (cumulating periodically). With Instalment 13 a CD-ROM was published that containes images of all title-pages in addition to the bibliographical descriptions. At present, 18 instalments have been published.
Since November 2000 the Guide is accessible as a database on the Internet. It can be searched by separate fields for collectors, auctioneers or (book)sellers, places, years and dates and so on, separately or in combination, or by all words of the description indiscriminately (years and dates included). The resulting set can be printed or downloaded in its entirety or by single record as a text file or HTML file.

Access via host ETCL (Electronic Text Centre Leiden): http://www.etcl.nl/goldenage/contents.stmArgos is the first peer-reviewed, limited area search engine (LASE) on the World-Wide Web...[wherein] Quality is controlled by a system of hyperlinked internet indices which are managed by qualified professionals who serve as the Associate Editors of the project." Sites are automatically filtered and then further distilled by a team of editors. This allows Argos to reduce the researchers' effort to locate quality materials on the ancient and medieval world. From the Argos main page additional links to other authoritative sites on related topics are provided. A drawback of this site is that it must be searched, which obscures the depth of its content and places the burden on users to articulate their needs instead of encouraging the exploration of the gathered resources.
