BENJAMIN HA-LEVY [DISPUTED] Chemdat Yamim Nidpas Pa'am Revi'it be Tosefet Tefilot Ha-Ramaz
Livorno, Attias, 1762, Best Edition. Hard Cover, 4 Volumes. 27 cm. Very Good/No Jacket.ΒΆ Title in decorative border, red and black letter. 4to, gilt-tooled calf, rubbed, spines rebacked in buckram. This work, a study of the fasts, feasts, customs and practices of Judaism through the liturgical year seen from the Kabalistic viewpoint, was previously ascribed to Nathan Benjamin Ghazzati, a mystic who convinced Shabbatai Zevi, that indeed he was the messiah. Recent scholarship gives work to Benjamin, another famous mystic of Safad in the 17th century, who had no part in the Sabbatai Zevi messianism. The book gained acceptance in non-Sabbatean Kabalistic circles, and practices mentioned, especially the TuBe'Shevat Seder, were widely diffused. The book's popularity is also shown by the many editions issued by Sefardim, Ashkenazim, Italkim and oriental Jews into the 20th century. One Location each are reported for 1731, 1734, 1735 and 1741-44 issues. Kabbalism, which was developed to its first heights in Spain before the expulsion, is a system, which uses the Hebrew alphabet as a source for numerical values, which can be found in all words and in all biblical expressions. It was used be Jews as a world organizing principle. This organizing idea influenced Ramon Lull, and later the Italian neo Platonic philosophers, Marsilio Ficino and Pico della Mirandola, who became Christian Cabalists. This edition, the best compilation, is the one reprinted by preference in modern times.
