ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT OF THE DOUGLAS AIRCRAFT CO. Erection and Maintenance Manual for 0-25A Airplane United States Air Corps.
Santa Monica, CA, Issued by the Engineering Department of The Douglas Aircraft Co. 1930, First edition, Limited. Soft Cov., 4to, 68 Pp. + Foldout Diagram. Ill.: Engineering Department of The Douglas Aircraft Co.. Very Good/No Jacket.ΒΆ [ND but 1930 probably the beginning of May] the book consists entirely of blueprints, and inserted photographs. An index is included. The wraps are cloth backed blue prints. Several blue prints are folding. The aircraft is examined minutely, each assemblage is shown in both photograph and blueprint; 18 pages include inserted photos from 8" x 10"to 4" x 5". With 48 pages of blue prints, and a multi-fold black and white diagram. This work in progress was issued in only ten or fifteen copies for the use of the engineers and the air force. The date of issue is based on the dates in the photographs, all in April of that year. It is a snub nosed biplane, over powered for an observation plane, however, in the Nov. 28 l935 issue of "Interavia" [a Swiss publication] is a note;" Douglas Aviation recently completed a two seat fighter and dive bomber a development of the various two-seat observation aircraft which this firm produced in series for the American Air Force as well as for Peru and China. Single bay staggered biplane of metal, partly fabric, tapered wings ailerons above and below. fuselage welded steel tubing..engine supports removable..tail end of monocoque also removable..Wright cyclone SGR 1820 /f 53...raft..bomb rack..Span 31.5,upper,29.5 lower..max speed at 11,000ft 2ll mph .dive speed 400.range 460 miles etc. etc." The O 25A was surely a prototype of this plane. It was truly innovative for its time, a period whose innovations are often overlooked by comparison with the planes of WW I or II. An unusual survival from the beginnings of the success of the Douglas Company, far from a big name at that time. Unnoted at NUC, Rlin/OCLC or any other source. There is much dog-earing, as the blueprint pages are larger than the photo pages. And there is a hole through the first few pages affecting no text and no photos.
