Dorsey, An early American practitioner educated in the United States, published this medical text on operative surgery. It was the first written by an American and published here. Seven of the plates were drawn or engraved by the author. It went through 3 editions becoming a standard text. It was preceded by several issues of an English text with his revisions. He also published several of his innovations in operative surgery. "A renowned surgeon who performed the first successful ligation of the external iliac artery in the United States." ~Kaufman 211.
