It is the first such book to be published in the United States and important in both the history of photography and criminology. The text describes the crimes committed and the circumstances leading up to arrest and conviction in the biography which is accompanied by a photo of the criminal. It includes a chapter "Why Thieves are Photographed." In Addition it includes short, chapters on criminal methods, executions, opium addiction, fugitives from justice, and prison commutation laws, as well as intriguing chapters on mysterious unsolved murders, adventurers and adventuresses.
