BRITTEN, EMMA HARDINGE; WILLIAM BRITTEN Ghost land; or, Researches into the mysteries of occultism. Illustrated in a series of autobiographical sketches In Two Parts. Translated and Edited by Emma Hardinge Britten. Britten, William, supposed author.
Boston, Pub. for the Editor, 1872, First Edition. Hard Cover, 23 cm. 2 p. l. [3], 484 p. 1 l. Ill.: No Named Illustrator. Very Good-/No Jacket.¶ Spiritualism. By the author of "Art magic"; with extracts from the records of "Magical séances," etc. etc. Translated and edited by Emma Hardinge Britten. "A rather bizarre account of experiences with spirits, apparently written by Emma Hardinge Britten." Crabtree 984, noting the 1876 edition. Although it is comfortable as spiritualism, the book has among its ancestors John Dee and Edward Kelley, in their angelic solicitations. Of course, Dee, himself a scientist and mathematcian, may also have been connected with the Rosicrucians, if one follows Frances Yates, and thus it belongs in a catalog of "Science and Pseudo Science." ~OCLC. 14 Locs in the USA [NYP, STF,CUY ,LNN, FQG, CRL, ILC, BHA, HLS, LDL, PUL, RBN, WAU, WIH,] and 2 in the UK [EUM, EUW]. ~Original red cloth, decorative stamping in black and gold. The title page is set in gold ink. The cloth is quite worn but solid. Despite the institutional copies [and they are a rogues gallery of our most important research libraries], this is very rare in First Edition. A collectible, readable copy..
