Description: S.-Peterburg (St. Petersburg), Tipografiia A. S. Suvorina, 1906. Second edition, 7th-thousand, expanded and revised for 6 persons, instead of 10, n. d. (ca 1906); green cloth over boards, printed in black and decorated with an elaborate, floral border; illustrated with advertisements at the beginning and end of the book; endpapers perished, else complete; hinges strengthened with cloth tape; a bit of fraying and spotting to margins and edges of boards; in good condition. Though, the subject of vegetarianism in Russia would invariably bring to mind Lev Tolstoy and, indeed, the Posrednik publishing house he had co-founded would publish several works on vegetarianism in the 1890s - the very first vegetarian cook book in the country would be the current one, respectively written by and edited by the husband-and-wife team of Olga Zelenkova (1845 - 1921) and Aleksandr Petrovich Zelenkov (1850 - 1914). He was a surgeon, the founder of a sanitarium in Riga, and the co-founder and chairman of the first vegetarian society in Russia, the latter established in St. Petersburg and called "Ni ryba, ni miaso" (Neither Fish, Nor Flesh). Also a staunch crusader against alcohol, Zelenkov advocated for the combined benefits of both..a crusade, which initially did little to boost the popularity of vegetarianism in Russia. His wife, on the other hand, though sharing his beliefs, sagely chose not to touch the subject of drinking and just to approach the subject by emphasizing its benefits. The book was divided into sections - firstly, by seasons, with menues for breakfast and lunch for each day, starting with No.1 in the winter; then, the recipies for each menu were presented and cross-referenced. There were also chapters on kitchen equipment, on preserves, on buying fresh vegetables in St. Petersburg during wintertime, etc. Good .
