Title: The Lives and Campaigns of Grant and Lee. A Comparison and Contrast of the Deeds and Characters of the Two Great Leaders in the CIVIL War
Description: Chicago: Star Publishing Company, 1895. Hardcover. First edition; 9 1/4 x 6 1/2; pp. [17], 8-602, [4]; rebacked, with the original dark green, gilt-stamped cloth over boards preserved; gilt illustration to front board faded; a few spots to cloth; illustrated with numerous photographic plates, steel engravings, and maps; very good condition. A massive undertaking, the book - unlike many other biographies of the two great men - rather presented a comparative study of Grant and Lee and their lives, characters, careers, and the similarities and differences between the two of them. Also included were the reminiscences of Union General Oliver O. Howard (1830 - 1909) and Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church John Philip Newman (1826 - 1899). The author, Samuel Odell (1864 - 1948) was also a lawyer, who had been born in Illinois and practiced law there, but lived in Santa Cruz, CA in 1898 and moved permanently to Santa Monica and then Pasadena in 1903. He was a Mason and member of the Sierra Club. Odell wrote numerous books, many of them geared towards young adults, including two science fiction novels - "Atlanteans. Adam Lore's Choice - Stories for Young Men" (1889) and "The Last War; Or, The Triumph of the English Tongue" (1898). Ill.: 0. 2.
