Pages lightly toned, heavy toning on front cover, stain on side page edge, chipping near spine edges. "Among the fantastic properties in his most famous tale, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Jules Verne imagined many inventions that were later to become realities; and he imagined them far more accurately than other writers whose aims were more deliberately prophetic. His Nautilus is a prototype of the modern submarine, able to cross the world without refueling (appropriately, the same name was adopted for the first atomic submarine). It used electricity for propulsion, cooking, lighting, and protection, though in 1870 when the book was published Edison had not yet developed the electric bulb. Verne's novels coincided with the surge of interest in scientific discovery during the latter half of the nineteenth century, and they thrilled contemporary readers with speculation about the future. But first and last they are good stories, and the underwater kingdom of the mysterious, hate-ridden Captain Nemo keeps on fascinating readers even though the future it predicts has come and, to some extent, passed.".
