BELLAMANN, HENRY & KATHERINE Parris Mitchell of King's Row
Simon & Schuster, 1948. Book Club (BCE/BOMC). Hard Cover. Ill.: Palacios, Rafael D. (jacket design). Good/Good. Book club edition. Dust jacket edge wear & surface rubbing, chipping to dust jacket edges, pages toned, shelf wear. "Dr. Parris Mitchell has come home to find King's Row uneasy, a giant stirring in its sleep. World War I is causing hot arguments, and Parris' own newfangled psychiatry is a suspicious business. There were many obstacles to the progress of young Doctor Mitcell, not the least of which was the inner unrest of his own temperment. And he had a powerful opponent in his boyhood enemy, Fulmer Green, who wished to destroy his influence in the town. There were his involvements with the problems of nearly very person in Kings Row and their effect on his own complicated existence: the beautiful and disturbing Hazel Green; the proud and passionate Bethany Laneer, who flouted the conventions; the Pomerot boys, who demanded help in the solution of the mystery that shrouded their lives; the lovely Fanny Porter, whose childhood abhorrence of the sordid mechanics of family living destroyed her; the tender love story of Punch Rayne and his terrible revenge on those who had hurt Dyanna. These and many over lives left their mark on the highly sensitized nature of the young doctor who knew so well how to cure others but knew so little of this own needs. Above all, he had to endure the bittle conflict of his own hear, the conflict between a tender devotion to his fragile wife, Elise, and a passionate love for Randy, whose strength and maturity he needed. How, helped by some, hindered by others, Parris wins through to happiness and fufillment, is the principal theme of this story. Kings Row, too, while not prepared for the shattering impact of the twentieth century, survived and went forward. Parris Mitchell has grown up in this dramatic sequel, and so Kings Row, the real protagonist of this novel.".
