WADE, DAVID Geometric Patterns & Borders
Van Nostrand Reinhold Company, 1982. Large Softcover. Good. Spine faintly creased, owner bookplate inside, minor shelf wear. Binding tight. "Graphic, textile, wallpaper, and book designers, architects, and artists working in a variety of crafts and professions will welcome this book. Geometric Patterns and Borders fill a design gap and will have wide application in studios, workshops and schools of design and of applied arts and crafts. No other book offers such a wide range of geometric patterns, nor so direct and easy a method of building these designs from a simple grid. Geometric Patterns and Borders contains over 500 patterns and 200 borders in twenty-three categories -- from 'square-based' to 'petal' -- drawn from over 40 cultures. The vast majority are built up of straight lines, a few involve curves and circles, none require free-hand drawing, and all can be constructed with a ruler and (occasionally) a compass. David Wade has selected timeless and traditional geometrical patterns, borders and decorations originating from American Indian, West African, Muslim, Celtic, ancient Greek and other cultures around the world. His book is primarily visual. The text is confined to an explanatory introduction, a note on use, and captions stating the country of origin. The layout gives greatest weight to the finished designs, many of which at first glance look amazingly complex and baffling, but are not. To demostrate this, the underlying simplicity of the design is shown in a separate panel so that even novices can understand how the pattern is created, and can re-create and adapt it for themselves without difficulty. For clairty's sake the book is printed in two colors -- the underlying grid in blue, the pattern in black.".
