"The Alvars were twelve Vaishnava saints, who during the early medieval period of Tamil history (between the seventh and the tenth centuries CE) helped revive devotional Hinduism (bhakti) through their hymns of worship to Vishnu and his avatars. They included a woman (Andal). The collection of their hymns are known as Divya Prabhandham. The Bhakti literature that sprang from these Alvars has contributed to the establishment and sustenance of a culture that broke away from the ritual-oriented Vedic religion and rooted itself in Devotion as the only path for salvation. In addition they helped to make the Tamil religious life independent of a knowledge of Sanskrit." -- Wikipedia CONTENTS: Editorial Preface; Preface; GENERAL INTRODUCTION; TRANSLATIONS AND NOTES: A Hymn of Praise -- Periyalvar: Tiruppallandu; Little Krishna and The Moon -- Periyalvar: Tirumoli, I. 4; 'Lord, in the fulness of my might I would for Thee be strong' -- Tirumangai: Periya Tirumoli, I. 3; 'Who shall deliver me from the body of this death?' -- Tirumangai: Periya Tirumoli, XI. 8; 'He condescends to them of low estate' -- Tirumangai: Periya Tirumoli, V. 8; Renunciation -- Kulasekaran: Perumal Tirumoli, C. 3; 'The worldly hope men set their hearts upon turns ashes..' -- Kulasekaran: Perumal Tirumoli, C. 4; 'All my hope on Thee is stayed' -- Kulasekaran: Perumal Tirumoli, C. 5; The Maiden's Vow -- Andal: Tiruppavai: Introduction; Translation; Nammalvar: Tiruviruttam: Introduction; Translation and Notes; Index.
