Soon after, he changed the Department of history for one of poetry, continuing to contribute political articles to the journal de Debats, and sits as a Deputy in the Chamber from 1835 to 1848. In 1833 he was charged with a mission to study German methods of teaching, and has published a report advocating the necessity of new methods and technical instructions. In 1844 he was elected a member of the French Academy. During the revolution of February 1848 Girardin was for a moment a Minister, but after the establishment of the second French Republic, he was not re-elected Deputy of the National Assembly. After the Franco-Prussian war, he was returned to the Assembly of Bordeaux in his old Department - Haute-Vienne. It Orleanists tendencies and their objections to the Third Republic were strong, and although he at first supported Adolphe Thiers, he afterwards became the leader of the opposition to the President.
