Quyle, Paul (1925-2011) and Joyce Quyle - Collection of Ephemera by or Related to Paul (1925-2011) and Joyce Quyle, Philter Press, Quyle Kilns, Moxon Chappel

Title: Collection of Ephemera by or Related to Paul (1925-2011) and Joyce Quyle, Philter Press, Quyle Kilns, Moxon Chappel
Description: Murphys, California: 1960s-1980s. About 60 letterpress flyers and other ephemera and metal type. Quyle, started printing in the 1950s when he and his wife, Joyce, needed labels to put on items for sale in their Murphys shop. He acquired a simple hand press and set to work, quickly realizing that the work activity was going to become a hobby that would morph into a passion. His press, made in 1825, was for a time the oldest iron press in the United States, until an acquaintance of Quyle's found one that was one year older. Between the two printers and their presses, hand-press scholars were able to solve what had been a mystery: The bar that pulls the press was attached to one side in 1825 and on the other side a year earlier, so now it is known when that change was made. In addition to the Columbian, Quyle had 27 other hand presses in storage. He is a member of the Moxon Chappel, a group of printers who meet to share printing projects. Quyle has been a member for 35 years, and said the group consists of amateurs and professionals who have held meetings all over the United States and in Egypt and Mexico. .
