Thornton (Dr. Robert John) - The Temple of Flora, or Garden of the Botanist, (the So-Called 'Lottery Edition')

Title: The Temple of Flora, or Garden of the Botanist, (the So-Called 'Lottery Edition')
Description: London: By the author,1812. Small Folio, half morocco, rubbed, inner edges gilt-tooled, spine gilt in compartments, sunned. Engraved pictorial title and half-title,original hand-coloured stipple-engraved frontispiece, 2 uncoloured stipple engraverd allegorical plates, and 28 original hand-coloured aquatint botanical plates, printed in blue on thick wove paper, each c.370 x 290mm. occasional marginal soiling, some spotting and offsetting to tissue guards only; presentation inscription by Lady Sidmouth on front free endpaper, recipient's name partially erased, and armorial bookplate of M. Philips. Inscribed "For Miss Georgiana ..... a last remembrance from Lady Sidmouth'" presumably around 1842, the year the second Lady Sidmouth died. There is a second inscription, attached as Thornton Sidmouth 1, of 'M. Sidmouth, Richmond Park'. This is clearly a different hand to the other, and must be that of Marianne Sidmouth, at their White Lodge, Richmond Park address, the house given to Viscount Sidmouth by a grateful King George III, therefore presumably inscribed between 1823 and 1842 *** This reduced-format version of Thornton's magnum opus was published in a vain attempt to finance the continuation of the magnificent folio edition started in 1799. Copies of the book and individual plates were sold by lottery, but this venture also failed and bankrupted Thornton. The work, however, in both formats remains one of the greatest of all botanical works. This copy includes the plate depicting The Persian Cyclamen, which is sometimes missing. Sitwell, Great Flower Books, p. 143. .
